Self-kindness, boundaries and rest in February
In recent years, “self-love” has become a popular phrase. We’re told to love ourselves fiercely, confidently, unapologetically. While that idea is powerful, it can sometimes feel like pressure. Loving yourself all the time can feel impossible when you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or simply human. This February, we invite a softer approach, one that moves beyond self-love and into self-kindness, boundaries, rest, and patience.
Self-kindness is love in action. It’s the way you speak to yourself on hard days. It’s allowing yourself to move slowly without guilt. It’s noticing when you’re stretched too thin and choosing rest instead of pushing through. Unlike the polished version of self-love we often see online, self-kindness meets you exactly where you are, not where you think you “should” be.
So many of us have been conditioned to be critical of ourselves. We notice our flaws before our strengths. We compare ourselves to unrealistic standards and internalise the belief that we need fixing. Choosing self-kindness is a quiet rebellion against that narrative. It’s saying, I don’t need to be perfect to be worthy of care.
This is where creative and art-based practices can offer something unique. Art therapy invites expression without judgment. You don’t need to be “good” at art. The process itself becomes a gentle conversation with yourself. Through colour, texture, movement, and making, we can explore emotions, release tension, and reconnect with parts of ourselves that may feel overlooked or silenced.
Art can become a boundary. A pause. A place to practice patience. It allows us to externalise what we’re carrying and see it with compassion rather than criticism.
If you’re looking for a gentle way to begin or deepen this journey, you’re warmly invited to join Simone’s Galentine’s Craft Night on February 13th, from 6:00–8:00pm. This event is designed as a welcoming, supportive space for women and non-binary people to come together, create, and connect. It’s not about romantic love, it’s about nurturing yourself in community, through creativity, kindness, and shared presence.
This February, instead of asking yourself to love everything about who you are, try something softer. Be patient. Be kind. Set one small boundary. Take one intentional rest. Create something just for you.
Self-love doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful. Sometimes, it looks like choosing yourself gently again and again.
