Expressing yourself in June
Express Yourself This Winter: The Power of Movement, Art, & Emotional Connection
As winter settles over Australia in June, the world around us begins to quieten. The mornings are crisp, the evenings arrive early, and nature invites us to stay in. This stillness can feel comforting, but for many, it also brings emotional weight. The colder months often surface feelings we’ve kept at bay: tension, sadness, restlessness, even loneliness. However, this is not something to fear, it's a powerful invitation to express yourself.
We often associate self-expression with loud, colourful moments, but expression in winter is deeper, more personal. It’s less about performance and more about connection: to your emotions, your body, and your truth. In fact, winter may be the most important time to tune in and let what’s inside come out, through movement, art, sound, and presence.
Emotions Are Meant to Move
Emotions are, quite literally, energy in motion. When we suppress how we feel, whether it’s anger, grief, excitement, or fear, that energy doesn’t disappear. It stores itself in the body, showing up as tension in our chest, tightness in our throat, heaviness in our limbs. Over time, this unexpressed emotion can lead to disconnection, stress, and even illness.
One of the most accessible ways to release this energy is through movement. You don’t have to be a dancer. You just have to move in a way that feels good to you. Put on a piece of music and let your body respond. Sway, stomp, stretch — it doesn’t matter how it looks. What matters is that it’s honest.
Get It Out of Your Head and Onto the Page
For some people, moving their body to express how they feel can feel a bit awkward or even intimidating and that’s totally okay. That’s where other types of art comes in. Think painting, sketching, scribbling, whatever feels fun or freeing. You don’t need to be “good at art.” You just need a bit of curiosity and a willingness to see what shows up.
Grab some pencils, crayons, paint and just start playing around. Don’t worry about making it pretty. This isn’t about perfection. It’s about expression. What would your anxiety look like as a colour? What shape would your joy take? Let it spill out on the page.
And if visuals aren’t your thing, writing it out can be just as powerful. Journaling doesn’t have to be full sentences or beautifully written thoughts. Sometimes it’s just scribbling down words, random phrases, or feelings as they pop into your head. It can be messy, chaotic, totally unfiltered. Just throw it on the page. Angry? Tired? Overwhelmed? Write it. No structure needed. Just getting it out of your head and onto paper can bring so much clarity and relief.
This kind of creative outlet is a form of art therapy. It’s not about making art, it’s about making contact with what’s going on inside. With your feelings, your body, your story.
This June, Let Expression Be Your Inner Fire
As the world outside cools, let your inner world warm up. Don’t wait for summer to move, paint, sing, or share. Let June be the month you reconnect with your emotional landscape. Let your body speak. Let your heart guide your hands.
Expression isn’t just an outlet. It’s a pathway to balance, healing, and wholeness. You don’t have to do it perfectly — you just have to start.
So this winter, don’t freeze your feelings. Express them. Move them. Paint them. Speak them. Dance them. Let them lead you home.
