Autistic Adults Social Circle

Bree came to me back in November 2023 to discuss the idea of starting this group.

We’ve been able to work together with me supporting her in getting this up and running through two open table sessions where the local autistic community was invited to come along and share their ideas. As a result of this, Bree is ready to start this group to provide a space for autistic adults to come and be with others that are similar to her. Bree has said that after being diagnosed as autistic (we both use identity first language) last year, she was looking for social support groups but the closest ones were in Melbourne. She wants to be able to create healthy social situations for herself and other autistic people (with reduced need for support workers to be present) where they can feel free to be themselves and not mask.

During the open table sessions, we discussed the possibility of fortnightly circle meetings that would be at a range of locations across the border and north east Victoria, and at different days and times to suit a variety of people. Activities might include going to a cafe for a social catch up, or doing an arts and craft session at a local organisation. We are open to more ideas, please message us below.

We are now ready to hold our first event on Saturday 6th April, at Nouriel Park, near The River Deck, at 11am. Please check our event page for more details, you can rsvp through the form there. We believe that self-diagnosis is valid, especially with the often prohibitive cost of assessments, so you don’t need a formal diagnosis to attend. At this stage attendance is free, but a small charge might be added later to help cover the costs of running the group, or if doing an activity that costs money. Please fill in this form below to be added to our mailing list about further events with the AASC, or to offer any other suggestions.
