Amanda Hodges - Occupational Therapist
My Occupational Therapy Philosophy
Early in my career, a mentor shared a perspective that transformed my practice: “OT is about continually learning and growing— it is unfair to think you need to know it all in your first few years.” Twelve years later, this remains the essence of my supervision style. I believe that professional growth happens best in a safe, collaborative, and strengths-based environment. My goal is to move away from the traditional style of supervision and instead offer a space similar to a conversation with a trusted colleague—one that is equally supportive and evidence-based.
Together, we will lean into your existing skills, refining your clinical reasoning and bringing your own innate solutions to the surface.
Clinical Areas of Expertise
I offer supervision and mentoring across a broad range of clinical domains, with a particular focus on Early Childhood Intervention and Regional Practice. Areas of support include:
Peadiatric Capacity Building: Goal-directed support for children, families, and educators.
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Evidence-based strategies for toileting, sleep, and dressing.
Sensory Processing: Comprehensive assessment for diagnosis, strategy development, and sensory supportive tools.
Equipment Prescription: Specialist seating, mobility/wheelchairs, showering, grooming, and mealtime aids.
Strategy efficacy: Navigating challenging conversations and improving client follow-through.
Social & Developmental Growth: Focused support for play development and social skill building.
Sustainable Career Longevity
Beyond my clinical skills, I am passionate about protecting the therapist behind the concept of the 'therapeutic use of self'. Our work is diverse and rewarding, but it requires awareness and intentionality to avoid burnout. I can provide guidance on:
Revisiting Your "Why": Aligning your practice with your core values and personality and how that can look in therapy.
Day-to-day Flow: Streamlining therapeutic practices and documentation to support your working week.
Work and Life: Maintaining a healthy boundary between your professional and "non-work" life.
Experience & Background
With a career spanning Early Childhood Intervention (Key Worker), Occupational Rehabilitation, and Team Leadership (managing a multidisciplinary team of 10+), I bring a wealth of experience in:
Multidisciplinary & Transdisciplinary Collaboration: Working alongside Speech Pathologists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, and Educators and understanding their roles.
Regional & Outreach Services: Developing the resourcefulness and creative problem-solving required for rural practice as an Occupational Therapist.
Student & Peer Mentorship: Meeting therapists where they are at in their careers.
