Book Review - "About a Girl" by Rebekah Robertson

Understanding Gender Dysphoria - “About a Girl”, by Rebekah Robertson OAM, Penguin Publishing.

This book is a deeply moving account of a mother’s story in navigating her transgender child’s journey in growing up, and demonstrates the fierce determination for her to live and thrive without fear in an often unaccepting and resistant world.

An immersive and inspirational read, written by an Australian actor Rebekah Robertson who with her then husband had twin boys, one of which by the age of three was identifying as a female. Their navigation of the medical system to access and ensure medical support for their daughter was part of a 2013 landmark legal challenge that changed the jurisdiction of the Family Law court in regard to puberty-blocking medication.

A mother’s personal perspective exemplifies the fierce and deep love and support for her child Georgie Stone OAM, also an actor in her own right and transgender advocate, is often a heart-breaking insight into not only the challenges of raising a transgender child, but the many external obstacles for acceptance and basic human rights.  The author is the founder of Transcend Australia in 2012, a support and advocacy network for transgender children and their families.
