Tuesdays with Tayla - What does a Mental Health Social Worker do?

Hi All!

I am a locally based Mental Health Social Worker.

You are probably thinking what does a Mental Health Social Worker even do?

Excuse me, I am confused

Well, we are one of those ‘mysterious professions’ where only those who work or study in the field really know what it is. Mental Health Social Workers work as both individual practitioners and members of multidisciplinary teams. Social workers recognise the causes of most problems can be found in social and structural factors such as inequality. Using a person-in-environment perspective to understand people’s circumstances, they work with people to create a fairer, more inclusive society. They work with people with diverse abilities, identities and cultural backgrounds across various stages of life.

What does a mental health social worker do?

My role at Phoenix Wings Wellness includes providing 1:1 therapy that is mostly with children, adolescents, and young people. I use a mix of creative / expressive strategies as well as research-based therapies to build rapport and relationships, create treatment plans, and work with clients and their caregivers.

You can expect to get your hands dirty (only if you want), laugh a lot (and cry, which is totally acceptable and okay to do here!) and maybe go for a walk to enjoy the sunshine. In short, I accommodate your needs. Therapy doesn’t always have to be talking with four walls around us.

Creative connection between two people
